**The Opportunity**
This position, **Principal Systems Engineer Specialist,** works out of our **San Diego, CA location on site** . This role is in the Infectious Diseases Division in Abbott Rapid Diagnostics. The person hired will have the opportunity to work with the team responsible for delivering the next generation diagnostic platform.

The **Principal Systems Engineer Specialist** applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to ensure and verify the design of the subsystems integrate and function optimally as a system, to provide system solutions, improvements and enhancements to achieve overall systems performance.
**What You’ll Work On**
+ **Evaluate Needs:** Define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters, and ensure compatibility of all physical, functional, and program interfaces.
+ **Guides** the definition of critical performance requirements that link to system design requirements across interacting functions. Guides significant operational, process or system level product improvements. Conceptualizes, designs, and leads activities driven by strategic business needs.
+ **Strategic Leadership:** Conceptualize, design, and lead activities driven by strategic business needs. Identify and resolve complex system-level problems. Research and propose new methods, technologies, or process applications.
+ **Optimize Performance:** Lead various analyses to optimize total system performance, including functionality, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, system security, regulatory compliance, certification, product assurance, and other quality factors.
+ **Guide Development:** Oversee planning, organization, implementation, and monitoring of requirements, design, tools, risks, issues, opportunities, and technology readiness assessment processes. Resolve cross-functional organizational and technical issues.
**Additional Responsibilities:**
**Performance Requirements:** Define critical performance requirements linking to system design across interacting functions. Guide significant operational, process, or system-level product improvements.
**Development Collaboration:** Work with engineers and architects during development stages, prove concepts, and develop test methods, technologies, or process applications.
**Subject Matter Expertise:** Serve as an SME for subsystems interactions within instrumentation and product family. Be an established opinion leader in your area of expertise.
**Systems Analysis:** Lead systems-related analysis to assess performance against design specifications and system interactions. Conduct technical reviews of complex system-related verification and characterization studies. **Integration Testing:** Develop systems integration test methods/processes and troubleshoot instrument and assay/reagent interaction issues to determine root causes and solutions.
**Team Development:** Mentor junior team members and take responsibility for training on SI-specific skills and knowledge transfer activities.
**Special Studies:** Oversee special studies or experiments to improve system performance, quality, and define subsystem enhancements or new components, products, or processes.
**Quantitative Methods:** Apply complex quantitative methods, analyze data, evaluate results, form conclusions, and implement improvements.
**Problem-Solving:** Apply systematic problem-solving methodologies to identify, prioritize, communicate, and resolve system-level technical issues.
**Continuous Improvement:** Champion continuous improvement of processes and work methodologies by interfacing with peers and cross-functional groups to analyze activities and improve performance workflows and work processes. **Collaboration:** Promote collaboration with various departments/disciplines (e.g., systems integration, quality engineering, assay and instrument design, on-market support, software, technology) through knowledge of their interactions and impacts.
**Quality Standards:** Champion products and services that meet the highest technical and quality standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies. Embrace first-time quality by not accepting, creating, or passing defects and speaking up.
**Affordability Goals:** Analyze program technical and cost requirements to develop affordability goals and objectives. Guide development and analysis of affordability initiatives and opportunities.
**Project Management:** Lead and review projects, timelines, and tasks. Recommend resource estimates for project plans, timelines, and impact of scope changes. Provide input into developing departmental and site processes and procedures. Monitor expenses and may oversee project budget planning and management.
**Performance Analysis:** Lead team members in analyzing system architecture performance by developing and integrating performance budgets and evaluating Key Performance Parameters (KPPs), Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs).
**Optimization Techniques:** Apply and analyze multiple optimization process techniques, set targets, ranges, and specs, conduct DOE, Guard band, System Error Budget Analysis, Capability (CPk), Test Method development, determine functionality and system compatibility of multiple components, and troubleshoot parts and subsystems. Review and develop FMEA, hazards, and modes of control for Risk Management. Lead complex investigations involving interacting system-level issues.
**Required Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)
+ Minimum 8 years of experience in similar role
+ Recognized experience leading complex system and risk analysis
+ Demonstrated ability to lead and utilize data to make decisions and influence stakeholders
+ Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, creativity, and independent thought
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills
+ Expert knowledge of Systems and / or Assay development principles and concepts
+ Demonstrated ability to apply principles of systems thinking to accelerate performance
+ Demonstrated Customer Focus, making their needs a primary focus of one's actions
**Preferred:**
+ Background in Regulated Biosciences or Medical industry and Medical Devices Experience of at least 2 years.

The base pay for this position is $112,000.00 – $224,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
