Principal Machine Learning (ML) Engineering Manager

This work involves the development of broadly applicable, high-impact solution patterns and open-source software assets that contribute to the Microsoft platform. We are hiring a **Principal Machine Learning (ML) Engineering Manager** with deep experience and expertise in designing and delivering solutions using modern software engineering practices and cloud technologies. You will work closely with a technical program manager and data scientist to co-lead a cross-functional team to work side-by-side with high-impact and strategic customers and their engineers to build innovative solutions. We invest in your health, wellness, and financial future by offering a competitive package including a wide range of benefits built around your personal needs and those close to you. **Responsibilities** + Oversees partnership with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements within and across teams for multiple solutions or product lines. + Oversees teams and provides technical leadership for identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform. + Optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI). + Oversees teams to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items in coordination with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) across products. + Leads the resolution of complex site incidents and oversees for Designated Responsible Individuals (DRI) and directs the work of other engineers across product lines. + Keeps informed of and communicates new standards to ensure that the product development and scaling to customer requirements and applies best practices for meeting scaling needs and performance expectations and holds accountability for products that do not meet expectations. + Embodies our culture (https://careers.microsoft.com/us/en/culture) and values (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/about/corporate-values) . **Qualifications** **Required/Minimum Qualifications** + Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python + OR equivalent experience. + 8+ years people management experience. + 5+ years practical experience with Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or Amazon Web Service (AWS). + 5+ years experience leading geographically dispersed, diverse, and virtual teams. + 3+ years experience with practical issues around AI deployments, including hardware (client and server), software (AI frameworks, MLOps and GenAIOps), data (data protection, privacy, sovereignty); and legal/regulatory (IP, explainability, bias, and safety). + 3+ years demonstrated ability to work with customers and collaborate across company boundaries. **Other Requirements** + Microsoft is unable to sponsor a work visa for this role due to the nature of the role’s job duties. **Additional or Preferred Qualifications** + Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science + OR related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python + OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python + OR equivalent experience. + Experience in modern AI technologies and trends, including deep learning, reinforcement learning, foundation models for vision, audio, and language, GPT architectures, autonomous systems. + Experience with releasing open source software and building machine learning-powered features. + Enjoy travel and are comfortable with travel up to 25%. Software Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 - $314,400 per year.
