About AIIM:

African Infrastructure Investment Managers (“AIIM”) is one of the pre-eminent private equity infrastructure managers in Africa, having raised over USD3.9bn in capital over the last two decades. With 5 offices on the continent, AIIM has invested in more than 22 African countries, representing over 74 investments across the Power, Digital infrastructure, Transportation and Midstream sectors.

AIIM is a wholly owned subsidiary of Old Mutual Alternative Investments (OMAI), one of the largest private alternative investment managers in Africa, with assets under management of USD7.6 billion. OMAI manages private equity and impact funds as well as infrastructure funds through AIIM. Our investment approach goes “Beyond the Obvious” and enables us to uncover opportunities others may overlook. We aim to deliver superior risk-adjusted returns as well as make a positive social impact across Africa.

The Fund:

Off the back of our successful track record in conceptualizing and raising new infrastructure vehicles, AIIM has been selected as the preferred manager for a new USD 200-250 million target vehicle, the African Transition Acceleration Fund 1 (The Fund).

The Fund intends to focus on early stage investing in the African energy transition landscape, with a focus on 3 core thematic verticals, including multiple sub-sectors, broadly in the asset-heavy climate infra space:

Clean Electrons (Generation, transmission, battery storage, energy efficiency, etc)Clean Molecules (Production and handling of clean molecules)Sustainable Transport

The Fund will back infrastructure platforms with seasoned teams and an identified pre-construction pipeline, investing in both overheads, development costs and construction equity to enable the platforms to reach scale.  The Fund will also invest in scale-up capital funding needs for growth companies for example in the electric mobility or energy efficiency sectors.  The mandate is pan-Africa including north Africa.

The fund will not take the following risks:

Technology riskProof of concept risk (i.e. investing prior to product market fit)

The Rols:

An opportunity has arisen for an Investment Director to join a dynamic newly created niche team working in the African Energy Transition landscape at AIIM.  You will play a key leadership role in the team, focusing on origination, execution and asset management of investments.

Key Responsibilities

Partner with the Fund Head to build a scalable strategy to provide catalytic development capital across AfricaLead deals: originate, evaluate, structure, negotiate, execute and manage investments in early-stage development platform or scale up growth companies in the renewables, biofuels, hydrogen or electric vehicles spaceWork in accordance with the AIIM policies, procedures and relevant good practiceBuild and maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders, internal and externalOperate as an industry leader in the climate spaceBuild, lead and nurture an investment team in NairobiDevelop innovative and appropriate financial structures for complex transactionsProvide risk analysis and review of financial statements and valuationsHave oversight of bid documents and presentationsHave oversight of the asset companies with regard to the setting of strategy, ESG considerations, project implementation and contractual compliance, and serve on BoardsIdentify technical risk areas across and within assets and develop optimised solutionsLeverage cross-industry knowledge into projects to increase shareholder valueBe a leader in the AIIM transaction process, including due diligence on potential acquisitions, motivation of investment recommendations and participation in investment committee meetingsEnsure deal outcomes are in line with AIIM governance guiding principles through active participation and responsibility in decision making through deal execution processesProfile the AIIM business through representing AIIM funds in negotiations with counterparties on affairs pertaining to shareholder matters such as SHA provisions, SPV resourcing etcBe an active and value-adding member of the teamAssuming major changes in policy or consumer behaviour

Required Skills and Experience:

Relevant Tertiary Qualification15+ years relevant experience in investments, ideally both:financial investing experience, with leading investment firms or investing institutions, andexperience in the climate industry working in leadership roles in commercial development companies, preferably private equity-backed companiesDemonstrable passion for early-stage business development in the climate spaceSubstantial pan-Africa exposure and deep sustainability, energy efficiency, renewables or similar sector experienceSubstantial infrastructure sector exposure and/or experience in general growth capital for African businessesStrong knowledge and understanding of industry trends, key drivers of value creation, and financial, operational, strategic, and commercial variablesSpecific financial acumen with the capacity to demonstrate knowledge of and insight into financial principles and processes, and identify inconsistencies in dataAbility to apply sound business judgment and an analytical, pragmatic and creative approach to problem solvingDemonstrable execution/outcome/delivery skillsProven ability to prioritise between detailed day to day activity, including problem-solving, and longer-term activities and projectsProven ability to sustain high level of performance under pressure with tight deadlinesSuperior interpersonal and relationship building skills to build strong relationships with external and internal stakeholders across all levelsEffective communication skills including strong written and verbal communication competencyGood understanding of credit, legal and compliance issues as they apply across AfricaFrench language skills would be a bonus

Directs the implementation and execution of the investment strategy to optimise investment advisory services and maximise the support provided to the investment team to enable successful outcomes. Regularly reviews investment portfolios and adapts strategies to address evolving needs.

Identify and communicate the actions needed to implement the function's strategy and business plan within the business area or department; explain the relationship to the broader organization's mission, vision, and values; motivate people to commit to these tenets and do extraordinary things to achieve local business goals.

Financial Management and Control

Manage a significant portion of the organization's financial management and/or control processes.

Operations Management

Manage a significant operational area for the organization.

Manage and report on performance within the department or area of responsibility; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports and hold individuals accountable for achieving them; take appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of annual business objectives.
