Domestically, our 28 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. The International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City (IRC-SLC) Health Programs promote physical and psychological well being by facilitating access to healthcare services and providing education and advocacy. SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: The Health Promotion Program focuses on preventive health education and increasing refugees’ health literacy and access to health care resources. The program provides a series of health and wellness classes. The Health Promotion intern(s) will provide direct support to the Health Promotion Specialist in teaching Navigating the Healthcare system classes, organizing groups, transporting clients to medical appointments, and other special projects. COMMITMENT:10 – 20 hours per week, May 12th – August 29th RESPONSIBILITIES: • Teach Navigating the Healthcare System classes to adult refugee clients • Schedule health classes • Enter and track data in systems • Take at least 1 transport and/or facilitate 1 bus orientation per week • Assist in other health promotion areas as assigned • Assist in other health program needs as they come up • Participate in health program meetings • Support the IRC–SLC office with other duties as assigned LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Gain professional experience working in the public health sector. 2. Gain skills in assessing the public health needs of different communities. 3. Gain public speaking experience through teaching health classes to clients. Qualifications REQUIREMENTS: • Background in health promotion, social work, or other related field • Experience working with diverse populations • Motivated, flexible, able to work independently, self-starter qualities are necessary in this role • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite • Valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and willingness to drive clients highly prioritized • Understanding of program planning and evaluation preferred • Must be currently enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate program, or have graduated less than 6 months ago • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; fluency in additional foreign language preferred • Background check is required Intern will report to: Whitney Nguyen This is an unpaid volunteer position.
