Clinical Officer-Anesthetist

The Clinical Officer Anaesthetist is responsible for delivering high-quality anaesthetic care to patients undergoing surgical procedures, both elective and emergency, within the Hagadera Refugee Camp Hospital. This role involves pre-operative assessment, administration of anaesthesia, post-operative care, and collaboration with the surgical team to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Anaesthetic Management

Administer anaesthesia to patients for various surgical and medical procedures, ensuring appropriate techniques are utilized based on patient assessment.Monitor patients throughout surgical procedures, managing and responding to any anaesthetic-related complications.Conduct pre-operative evaluations to determine suitable anaesthetic plans and obtain informed consent. Provide post-operative care, including pain management and monitoring recovery from anaesthesia.

Theatre and Equipment Oversight

Supervise theatre staff to ensure efficient and safe operations within the surgical suite. Keep an updated inventory of theatre equipment, their maintenance schedule and working status. Raise any requests for repairs and maintenance in a timely manner.Manage inventory of anaesthetic medications and supplies, ensuring availability and proper storage.

Emergency Response and Patient Care

Participate in emergency response teams for trauma cases and mass casualty incidents, providing critical anaesthetic support.Assist in the management of critically ill patients in various hospital departments as needed. Provide health education to patients and their families regarding anaesthetic procedures and post-operative care.Attend to minor Surgical cases and procedures referred to theatre (Esophageal foreign body removal, Ear and nose foreign body removal, circumcisions, excision of ganglions and lipomas.

Training and Continuous Education

Conduct on-the-job training sessions for medical staff, enhancing their knowledge and skills in anaesthetic practices.Participate in regular medical education meetings and workshops to stay updated on advancements in anaesthesia.

Documentation and Reporting

Accurately document all anaesthetic procedures, patient responses, and any complications encountered.Prepare and submit regular reports on theatre activities and anaesthetic services to the Medical Officer in charge.

Higher Diploma in Anaesthesia from a recognized medical training institution.Registration with the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya.

Required Experience & Competencies

Minimum of 2 years of experience as an Anaesthetist in a busy hospital setting. Proficiency in administering various anaesthetic techniques and managing related equipment.Strong clinical and critical thinking skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural team environment.Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.Experience working in resource-limited or humanitarian settings is an added advantage.
